 Matter

Learning outcomes:

* To understand about elements and compounds

* To differentiate between elements and compounds

The appropriate video is given below:

Notes:

* Elements are pure substances that exhibit all the properties of matter

* There are 118 elements known to us and they can be metals, non-metals, metalloids and inert gases.

Ex: Hydrogen, Oxygen

* Compounds are pure substances that are formed by the combination of two or more elements.

* Elements combine in fixed ratio to form a compund.

Ex: H2O, CO2

Water has hydrogen and oxygen combining in 2:1 ratio.

Assessment questions:

* Are elements pure substances?

* What is the first element of the periodic table?

* In what ratio does the elements in Carbon dioxide combine?
